My name is Rory Conner and I own and run this business from a small
workshop in West Co. Cork, which has some of the best scenery in
Ireland. The nearest town is Bantry, at the head of Bantry Bay.
I make all kinds of knives, some of which you can view in
the following pages. I took most of the photos myself, so the quality
is not fantastic but I think it will give you an some idea what my
knives look like.
The prices vary hugely from 45 euro to 500 euro, depending on what I
have to make. I always use good quality materials hardwoods, wood -
laminates, stainless steel and brass, high quality steels and leather.
For the blades, I use high carbon steels, stainless and non stainless
and pattern welded i.e. ATS34, 440, 440c, 01, D2 and Damasteel I don't
do my own heat treating due to the complexities of the different steels.
The sheaths, where appropriate, are heavy leather, wet formed
(blocked). On the more expensive knives I also hand saddle stitch them
with braided waxed nylon.
All rivets are either brass or copper, which won't rust and eat the
leather away. I also use a unique method of retaining the knife in its
sheath. Generally I don't make real tube sheaths. I find that friction
fit doesn't really hold the knife firmly, particularly after a few
years of use.
The methods of construction for the knives are usually full tang.
Bolsters or guards are riveted and sometimes silver-soldered to stop
capillary action of fluids into the handle.
Handles are attached with epoxy, pins, cutlers' rivets, tubes, or a
special kind of bolt ---custom made for me. Handles are finished on the
knife.
Blades are hand-ground, flat or hollow where appropriate, with
satin finish or a full polish. Most of the blades are vacuum hardened
although some of the carbon steel requires other methods.
I also sharpen all kinds of knives and re-serrate blades. A sharpening
service is available for scissors and shears. Cracked handles can be
replaced, old broken knives, copied, folding knives repaired and broken
springs or blades remade. Sheaths can also be replaced or repaired.
Turn around time FOR SHARPENING ONLY is 2 days. Repair time will be
given when I see the job.
CUSTOM & "ONE OFF" KNIVES
I will also make to customers' own designs. Quotations are free.
