I live in southern Sweden in a small village called
Agunnaryd with my wife and 2 kids. Its in the middle of one of the
largest connected woods in the country. Hunting and fishing are natural
here and they are my other big interests.
In Sweden we use knives with blade lengths of around 80-90 mm
(about 3.5 inches)when we go hunting. So my blades are seldom longer
than that, its different to American hunting knives. In 1995 I took
part in a course in knife making and after that I was hooked. I think
its more and more fun to make knives, there is always a new challenge
to overcome.
I make knives just to have something to do and its great to meet other
people who have the same interest. I get lots of mail from people
asking for catalogues and when I say that I never make 2 knives the
same, they have difficulty understanding that. When I go out to my
workshop to make a knife, I just pick up a blade, look at it, pick up
some handle material and chose on that. Once I start to make the knife,
I never know how it will turn out until its done.
I love to work in crosscut masur (masur birch). There is something
magical about this. You can colour the wood in a thousand different
ways. When I do that I usually start with black and then sandpaper of
the most of it, then I do the same again with dark brown up to yellow.
After each colour I use finer sandpaper. You can work up a big deep
color in the wood this way. I also do this with red, blue and other
colours. Other materials I use are Maple burl, Ebony, Birch burl,
Amboina, Alder burl.
After I'm done with the knife I take a long hard look at it and design
and build a sheath for that knife and that knife only. Visual elements
and color in the sheath echo elements in the knife. Each sheath fits
like a glove and is made to give years of good use.
I always do the sheath in leather. I use 2 sorts of skin. In Swedish,
Rarandslader and Sharflader. Rarandslader is not tanned all the way
through. This leather is hard and robust. Sharf leather is softer and
easier to make a pattern in."
Swedish steel is of the finest quality and very clean. Much of the
quality steel from Solingen in Germany is imported from Sweden and even
the Norwegians and the Finns import it although it is not always easy
to get them to admit that. For this and other reasons, knives made in
Scandanavian countries enjoy their well deserved reputation.
We have many good bladesmiths in Sweden. I use blades from Stefan
Brostrom, Johan Gustavsson, Christer Henriksson and Bengt Olsson and
other blade smiths.
I never do 2 knives exactly like each other, I don’t have any determined rules to work to so every knife is a special project.
